Since 1856, the Lang family has been supplying stone for projects as massive as the Ohio Statehouse or as small as a kitchen countertop. It is the oldest stone company in the United States and one of the oldest family-owned businesses in Columbus.
Born in Bachenau, Germany, Lang grew up in a family that owned a stone quarry. At 20, he immigrated to the US, where he moved to Columbus’s German Village and started Lang Stone, also in German Village, as a stone cutting and contracting business. Lang Stone provided the stone for most of the homes in German Village. Lang built his own home at 229 Beck Street, which still features the original cut stone steps and carved stone lintels that he built.
Over the years, Lang Stone has provided stone for many of Columbus’s building projects from the Ohio State University to Muirfield Village to the Ohio State House. Nearly every corner of Columbus and its surrounding communities have a Lang Stone project that was personally handled by the family.
Today Lang Stone has locations in the Brewery District and East Fifth Avenue. The company is still family-run, with Joan Coffman First and Lori Coffman Palmer, Matthias Lang’s great-great granddaughters, as its leaders. The company quarry, fabricate and distribute a full line of natural stone products from around the world and ship product to companies throughout the United States.
