Randall, of Conception Junction Mo., set a Bowfishing Association of America world record for river carpsuckers when he shot an 11-pound, 2-ounce fish on April 23. In the process he set a Missouri “alternative methods” state record, breaking a mark he set last year.
And all in the same place.
“I shot this fish about 20 yards from where I got last year’s state-record river carpsucker,” he told the Missouri Department of Conservation. “I’m still in shock that this happened.”
Randall’s fish measured 25 1/2 inches and had a girth of 20 1/2 inches. The department said river carpsuckers, unlike carp, generally are 12 to 15 inches long. They prefer quiet, silt-bottom pools, backwaters and oxbow lakes off large streams. But they often thrive in large impoundments such as Smithville that have turbid water.
“As soon as I pulled the fish out of the water, I knew it was bigger than the river carpsucker I caught last year,” said Randall, who broke his own Missouri state record by almost two pounds.
