Based on the world record nomination from America Records Institute (AMRI) and Decision No. WK/USA.INDIA/628/2020/No.84, World Records Union (WorldKings) officially declared La Rinconada gold mine is the highest gold mine in the world on December 12th, 2020.
The gold mine lies in the city of La Rinconada, Peru. The town is in the Ananea District, San Antonio de Putina Province, at the foot of La Bella Durmiente glacier.
High in the Andes, La Rinconada has an alpine / tundra climate, with no month having mean temperatures even close to the 10 °C (50 °F) threshold that would permit tree growth and a subtropical highland classification for the city.
Owing to the extreme elevation of the gold mine and the town, climatic conditions more closely resemble that of the west coast of Greenland. The town has rainy summers and dry winters with a large diurnal variation seeing cool to cold days and freezing night time temperatures throughout the year, with common snowfalls. The average annual temperature in La Rinconada is 1.2 °C (34.2 °F) and the average annual rainfall is 707 mm (27.8 in).
The economy of La Rinconada city revolves around the mine, as gold is the main (pretty much only) resource the city has. In fact, the mine is the only reason anyone is even there—and they all seemed to come at the same time to work at the gold mine.
