1986 –  Jim and Janice Dougherty, incorporate their pet superstore concept as Pacific Coast Distributing, Inc.

1987 – The company opened first two stores, originally called PetFood Warehouse, open in Arizona.

1989 – Change the store name from PetFood Warehouse to PETsMART® and open first full-service grooming salon as well as bird, fish and small pet departments.

1992 – Opened the first permanent in-store adoption center and veterinarian clinic.

2002 – The company starts testing PETsMART PETsHOTELs® in two of its Phoenix stores.

2004 – The company launches PETsMART® PetPerks®, its customer loyalty program, to provide pet parents with better communications and valuable offers.

2005 – The company moves away from the “mart” mentality and focus on  “smart” solutions— it becomes PetSmart.

2010 – The company partners with GNC and Martha Stewart to launch the first of many exclusive brands—GNC Pets TM and Martha Stewart Pets TM.

2011 – PetSmart Charities introduces Enhanced Adoption Centers inside ten PetSmart stores. These full-scale centers are open daily, house dogs and cats, and are run by a local animal-welfare organization.

2012 – The company extends its exclusive brands to include The Bret Michaels Pets Rock TM collection and Toys “R” Us Pets.”

2020 – PetSmart Charities facilitated the adoption of more than 9 million dogs and cats.
