7-Eleven operates, franchises, and licenses 78,029 stores in 19 countries and territories as of November 2021. While operating under its namesake brand globally, within the United States it operates as 7-Eleven nationally, as Speedway nationally but mostly in the Midwest & East Coast, and as Stripes Convenience Stores within the South Central United States; both Speedway and Stripes operate alongside 7-Eleven’s namesake stores in several markets.

7-Eleven also operates A-Plus locations with the name licensed from owner and fellow Metroplex-based Energy Transfer Partners, though most of these stores have since been rebranded as standard 7-Eleven stores.

The company’s milestones:

1927 – Southland Ice Company employee John Jefferson Green began selling ice, then he started selling eggs, milk, and bread from one of 16 ice house storefronts in Dallas, with permission from one of Southland’s founding directors, Joe C. Thompson Sr.

1928 – Southland ice docks began selling gasoline in 1928, again appealing to what the customer needed.

1939 – Company is operating 60 Tote’m Stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

 

 

1945 – Southland owned stores scattered over north-central Texas, operating from 7 in the morning to 11 at night, seven days a week.

1963 – 7-Eleven experimented with a 24-hour schedule in Austin, Texas, after an Austin store stayed open all night to satisfy customer demand.

1973 – York Seven Co., Ltd., established Licensing agreement and area service contract concluded with The Southland Corporation, USA (currently 7-Eleven, Inc.)

1974 – First 7-Eleven store opened in Japan.

1975 – 24-hour operations (Toramaru Store, Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture) begun.

1982 – POS system introduced EOB ordering system introduced.

1985 – Introduction of interactive registers able to transmit information to and from the headquarters and stores.

1989 – The company Introduced of prepaid cards.

 

 

1998 – The company began selling pagers and pager services in all United States 7-Elevens.

2003 – Continuing to expand, the company opened its 25,000th convenience store in 2003.

2005 – Seven-Eleven Japan made a tender offer and 7-Eleven, Inc. became its wholly owned subsidiary.

2007 –The sale of Seven Premium was launched.

2009 – The service of Seve Net Shopping was launched.

 

 

2010 – The first “green” 7-Eleven store opened in DeLand, Florida. The store features U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) elements.

2012 – A delivery service using the super-compact electric vehicle, Seven Easy Delivery was launched.

2015 – 7Rewards® is 7‑Eleven’s best-in-class loyalty program where customers are rewarded for every dollar spent.

2016 – First 7-Eleven store equipped with a hydrogen station was opened.

 

 

2021 – The 7NOW delivery business doubled in 2021 and continues to grow.

2022 – 7‑Eleven was recognized as the 2022 Innovation in Marketing winner following a year of creative campaigns that engaged and rewarded customers.
