The United States Navy (USN) is the maritime service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the eight uniformed services of the United States. It has the highest combined battle fleet tonnage (4,635,628 tonnes as of 2023) and the world’s largest aircraft carrier fleet, with 12 in service, two new carriers under construction, and five other carriers planned.

With 336,978 personnel on active duty and 101,583 in the Ready Reserve, the United States Navy is the third largest of the United States military service branches in terms of personnel. It has 290 deployable combat vessels and more than 2,623 operational aircraft as of January 2023.

October 13 marks the birthday of the U.S. Navy, which traces its roots back to the early days of the American Revolution. On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress established a naval force, hoping that a small fleet of privateers could attack British commerce and offset British sea power.

The early Continental navy was designed to work with privateers to wage tactical raids against the transports that supplied British forces in North America. To accomplish this mission the Continental Congress purchased, converted, and constructed a fleet of small ships — frigates, brigs, sloops, and schooners. These navy ships sailed independently or in pairs, hunting British commerce ships and transports.

The United States Navy played a major role in the American Civil War by blockading the Confederacy and seizing control of its rivers. It played a central role in the World War II defeat of Imperial Japan. The United States Navy emerged from World War II as the most powerful navy in the world.

The modern United States Navy maintains a sizable global presence, deploying in strength in such areas as the Western Pacific, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean. It is a blue-water navy with the ability to project force onto the littoral regions of the world, engage in forward deployments during peacetime, and rapidly respond to regional crises, making it a frequent actor in American foreign and military policy.
