Stripe, Inc. is an Irish-American financial services and software as a service (SaaS) company dual-headquartered in San Francisco, United States and Dublin, Ireland. The company primarily offers payment processing software and application programming interfaces (APIs) for e-commerce websites and mobile applications.

The company develops technologies and methodologies to reach people both engaging in and affected by a range of online dangers – including disinformation, human trafficking, gender-based violence and child sexual exploitation and abuse.

One of the most crucial reasons that FastCompany chose Stripe to become “The Most Innovative Company in 2022” is the Stripe Climate project. This project, launched in October 2020, lets its customers join its carbon-removal strategy by contributing a percentage of their digital sales that flow through Stripe’s software. In spring 2021, Stripe adjusted its onboarding process to allow new customers to join the program. Soon, one in 10 was opting in. Tens of thousands of businesses are now part of Stripe Climate.

Stripe routinely convenes panels of scientific experts to evaluate new tech and decide which companies it’ll back through Stripe Climate, and then pays a premium for these companies’ services in an effort to help them scale and bring the cost down.

In 2022, Stripe started a new subsidiary called Frontier that would direct spending on carbon removal. It announced $925 million in funding from major silicon valley companies to fund start up companies performing carbon capture in order to kick start the industry.
