While Disney may have first gained popularity with animated films, many of Disney’s live-action films have proved to be popular and financially successful. Many of them have been live-action remakes of Disney’s classic animated films, stories based on other classic stories, and even films based on Disney’s theme park attractions.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a live-action film series inspired by the Disney theme park attraction that shares its name, set during the Golden Age of Piracy. The franchise started with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. In the story, Captain Jack Sparrow and Will Turner, a pirate and blacksmith, respectively, must save Turner’s love, a governor’s daughter, from Sparrow’s former allies, who, thanks to the titular curse, become undead ghouls in the moonlight. The film proved popular, earning $654.3 million at the box office worldwide against a $140 million budget.

The follow-up film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, proved even more successful at the worldwide box office, earning $1.066 billion against a $225 million budget. The total five films would prove successful, earning $4.524 billion at the box office worldwide against a budget of at least $1.274 billion.
