Sunrun was co-founded in January 2007 by Lynn Jurich, Ed Fenster, and Nat Kreamer with a business model in which it offered customers either a lease or a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) business model whereby homeowners paid for electricity usage but did not buy solar panels outright, reducing the initial capital outlay required by the homeowner. Sunrun is responsible for installation, maintenance, monitoring, and repairs.

The company drives distribution by marketing solar service offerings through multiple channels, including its diverse partner network and direct-to-consumer operations allow it to achieve capital-efficient growth. In addition, the company claims that it has superior customer service operations. Sunrun generates revenue from operating leases and incentives and from solar energy systems and product sales.

In 2014, the company officially launched its partner recognition program to expand its reach in new areas. In August 2015, Sunrun went public and at the end of October 2015, Sunrun had more than 100,000 customers receiving its services.

In July 2018, Sunrun expanded its solar and battery service to the island of Puerto Rico. With operations in 23 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, Sunrun became the largest solar, storage, and energy services company in America, surpassing Solar City.
