A 14-year-old boy from the USA’s California, who set the World Record for the largest afro on a living person (male), in a video posted on X said one should not be ashamed of their natural hair.

His hair was measured in at an impressive 19.67 centimetres (7.74 inches) high and 24.83 centimetres (9.77 inches) wide with a circumference of 226 cm (88 inches) on August 10.

And he managed to grow his afro in just four years. Mendez said he was motivated by being a black and Filipino and also a mix of native American and wanted to experience his “black side”. The teenager said “most people are ashamed of their afros” and said he believes one should not be ashamed of their natural hair.

Mendez said his hair is a great conversation starter as not everybody meets a World Record holder every single day. At school, the teenager has to keep his hair in a manbun or a ponytail or twist or braids because students sitting behind him are not able to see the teacher or the board.
