The largest tree house in the world is in Crossville, Tennessee (USA). The owner, Horace Burgess claims that God personally gave him the contract to build the house. It is also known as “The Minister’s Tree House”.

Horace Burgess, a local minister, was praying in 1993 when he said God told him, “If you build a tree house, I’ll see that you never run out of material.” Inspired by the vision, Burgess began building the treehouse and continued working on it for the next 12 years. The 97-foot-tall tree house and church were supported by a still-living 80-foot-tall white oak tree with a 12-foot diameter base and relied on six other oak trees for support. He built it using 258,000 nails with a nailgun, and about 500 pounds of penny nails driven by hand. The treehouse was located on Beehive Lane in Crossville, Tennessee.

The building has a penthouse on the 10th floor and a large space in the center of the building that can be used for both devotional prayers as well as basketball games. It also has a church bell that weighs half a ton. Tourists documented their visit on the countless pieces of wood that make up the house.

Over time, Burgess’ treehouse became a popular tourist attraction. Burgess officiated 23 weddings in the treehouse church, and when not in service, the sanctuary doubled as a basketball court.

After being open for a long time the house has been closed in 2012 by the Fire Marshalls because it violates the local fire code. The local fire department is afraid that major fire might break, for a structure made only of wood would have devastating consequences.
