McDonald’s has teamed up with vegan company Beyond Meat to introduce its first plant-based burger, the McPlant, in the UK and Ireland.

Featuring a patty co-developed with Beyond Meat, the burger was trialled by the company at more than 250 restaurants last year.

As the latest addition to the company’s menu, the McPlant burger will be available across all McDonald’s stores in the UK and Ireland.

McDonald’s UK and Ireland chief marketing officer Michelle Graham-Clare said: “We’re so pleased that our McPlant is now officially ‘everywhere’ and available for more of our customers to taste and enjoy.

“We saw a remarkable response to the trial period back in October and now McPlant is on the high-street, in retail parks and service stations all over the UK and Ireland so all of our customers will be able to try it.

“We’re proud to once again be offering our customers more great-tasting options from McDonald’s. Its our same iconic taste – but plant-based.”

The plant-based burger, which took more than three years to develop, will be the first plant-based option offered by the company to its British and Irish customers.

The new burger features a vegan sesame bun, ketchup, pickles, lettuce, tomato and fresh onion, as well as vegan sauce and cheese. It is said to be prepared separately by using ‘dedicated utensils’.

In a similar move, KFC plans to add plant-based fried chicken from Beyond Meat to its menus.

This option will be available at KFC restaurants across the US for a limited period, starting from 10 January.
