“The Dog Cafe” in Los Angeles touts itself as the first of its kind in the United States to provide the style of pet adoption that has already gained popularity with cats throughout the country and abroad.

The idea of The Dog Cafe is to provide a fun, casual atmosphere for people to interact with adoptable dogs, all while drinking coffee and tea. Cafe owner Sarah Wolfgang is working closely with the South L.A. Animal Shelter and other local organizations. The plan is to bring the dogs in on a rotating basis, once they’ve been cleared as friendly and comfortable enough for the presumably large crowds.

The cafe had its grand opening on April 7, 2016. Visitors are required to sign a liability waiver and pay $10 entrance fee that includes a 55-minute visit with the dogs as well as one beverage, according to the website.

A list of the available dogs can be found on the cafe’s website along with a brief description of their personality and their backstory. All of the dogs are rescues that have been spayed and neutered and are all available for adoption except for Sharkie, the cafe’s mascot and pet of founder Sarah.

Visitors are not allowed to bring their dogs to the cafe due to a lack of city approval, but the staff is willing to coordinate meetings between dogs outside the property.
