The Clairton Plant is located 20 miles south of Pittsburgh on 392 acres along 3.3 miles of the west bank of the Monongahela River. The plant was built in 1901 by the St. Clair Steel Company and acquired by U. S. Steel in 1904. The largest coke manufacturing facility in the United States, operates nine coke oven batteries and produces approximately 4.7 million tons of coke annually.

It is part of the chain of U.S. Steel’s Mon Valley Works, supplying coke to the blast furnaces at the Edgar Thompson Plant. Coke is baked and processed coal, and is an important ingredient in steel.

The facility makes 13,000 tons of coke per day by baking coal at high temperatures and is by far Allegheny County’s largest single source of several pollutants. In 2022, the county levied more than $9 million in fines on the Clairton plant for clean air violations.
