The Consumer Technology Association’s (CTA) Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2022) opened in Las Vegas in person with full health protocols in place.

Press conferences and keynotes took place 3-4 January during the media-only days and the 52nd edition of the show proper opened on 5 January and runs now to 7 January, one day shorter than originally intended, reflecting challenges posed by Covid. Although several large companies, including Amazon and Google, cancelled their on-site plans, organisers said they were determined to press ahead and first reports said there were 1,900 exhibitors participating.

Health protocols include masks and proof of vaccination to attend in-person events. The CTA is also providing Abbott BinaxNOW Covid-19 tests at registration and attendees need to complete a rapid test 24 hours before entering a CES venue. PCR tests are also available for any attendees who are required to have one by their destination prior to departure from Las Vegas.

CTA CEO Gary Shapiro said: “As the world’s most influential technology event, CES is steadfast in its pledge to be the gathering place to showcase products and discuss ideas that will ultimately make our lives better. We are shortening the show to three days and have put in place comprehensive health measures for the safety of all attendees and participants.” He also made the point that “without risk there is no innovation”, adding that many smaller companies relied on the event to showcase their products. In 2021 CES was virtual only.

Those joining CES 2022 digitally can get access to 40 livestreamed conference sessions, keynotes, press conferences and engage with exhibitors. Registration information can be found at CES registration.
