Officials said the bridge was too rusty and shaky. A new Hulton bridge has been constructed to replace the original structure.

Pennsylvania, a northeastern U.S. state and one of the 13 original colonies, is known for its diverse terrain, which includes wide stretches of farmland, national forests and major waterways. Philadelphia, the Keystone State’s largest city, displays its rich history in Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed, and the Liberty Bell, an enduring symbol of American freedom.

The bridge, which connected Oakmont and Harmar, has been replaced by new structure that opened in October. It gained its most attention when PennDOT painted it lavender more than 15 years ago, one of the few bridges in the state ever painted that color.

Brayman Construction Corp. and its demolition subcontractor Demtech coordinated the construction and demolition under a $65.7 million contract with PennDOT. Officials closed a 1,000-foot safety perimeter around the bridge and installed plywood over the windows at Riverview Junior-Senior High School and several other buildings, but there seemed to be no damage from the blast.

High school students went to the Tenth Street Elementary School to watch a PowerPoint presentation about the project and a live streaming video coordinated by Brayman. Junior high students went to a nearby social service agency.

Contractors have 72 hours to clear a 300-foot-wide channel in the river, which was closed to traffic at 9 a.m. Barges and cranes were in place to begin removing the metal shell of the old bridge.
