(UsKings.us) Billboard advertising has been around in US since the 1830’s, so most Americans barely register the boards are there anymore. But one artist hoping to make people realise their ugliness with a new art installation.

Jennifer Bolande has created the Visible Distance / Second Sight project for this year’s Desert X Art Festival

Jennifer Bolande has created the Visible Distance / Second Sight project for this year’s Desert X Art Festival, which features 16 artworks scattered across 45 miles of the valley.

Anyone driving along the Gene Autry Trail, near Vista in Palm Springs, will find a series of billboards featuring perfectly-aligned photographs of the very mountains they are obscuring.

Looking up at the billboards is supposed to draw our attention back to the landscape itself

It continues: “Within the desert empire of roadside signs, Bolande chooses to advertise the very thing so often overlooked.

“Looking up at the billboards our attention is drawn back to the landscape itself.

“This work is not a site to stop at, it is meant to be experienced from a moving car.”
